Options for Surface Reconstruction

In reverse engineering four types of surface reconstruction can be distinguished. They can be adapted to the requirements and targets of the process from an existing object back to its digital CAD data.

Manual surface reconstruction


In manual surface reconstruction the layout of the patch is manually adapted to the feature lines of the geometrical object. Hereby it is gradually adapted to the original design, including sharp edges.

Advantages:
  • Patch-layout similar to original object
  • Patches can easily be changed in CAD
  • High precision can punctually be applied where required

  • Depending on required precision
  • Depending on original geometrical shape
  • Example gearwheel: 927 surfaces, standard deviation 0,012 mm



Optimized surface reconstruction


Optimised surface reconstruction

Automated generation of patch layout from triangular mesh. Manual rework in possibly inaccurate areas.

Advantages:
  • Quick but exact generation
  • Patches follow main feature lines
  • Precision good to excellent, depending on number of patches
Number of patches/ intensity of effort
  • Medium/ low
  • Example gearwheel: 475 surfaces, standard deviation 0,005 mm



Analytical surface reconstruction


Analytic surface reconstruction
Manual generation of patch layout. Primary surfaces are assigned to regular geometric patterns or to free-form surfaces, connected by fillets.

Advantages:
  • Patch-layout identical with constructional solution
  • Patches can easily be changed in CAD
  • mathematically exact norm surfaces
Number of patches/ intensity of effort
  • Low/ medium
  • Depending on outline
  • Example gearwheel: 104 surfaces, standard deviation 0,035 mm



Constructional surface reconstruction


Constructional surface reconstruction

Sectional images from scan data are mathematically optimized. Constructional generation of CAD-object.

Advantages:
  • Patch-layout like in conventional construction process
  • Very easy to adapt
Number of patches/ intensity of effort
  • Various
  • Depending on outline
  • Example gearwheel: 766 surfaces, standard deviation 0,028 mm
